Women Mean Business - Gender Diversity in the Workplace

Women Mean Business - Gender Diversity in the Workplace

The Maine Women's Fund is proud to present a forum for and about increasing gender diversity in the workplace.  Local leaders will discuss how to create corporate cultures which not only attract women, but also ensure they have equal standing in their work environments. The forum takes place Thursday, November 2, 2017, 3:00– 5:30 pm at the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Hall in Portland.

Why is this topic timely?

Companies that:

  • Focus on gender diversity contribute more to the economy – McKinsey reported in 2015 that the global economy could be between $12 trillion and $28 trillion larger in 2025 if gender gaps were reduced or eliminated.
  • Have women on boards and in management are more profitable – Morgan Stanley noted in May of 2016 that companies with better gender diversity had better financial performance and lower volatility.
  • Companies with more women in senior management- even when "more" is limited to a single woman-outperformed an entire sample of over 3,000 companies in terms of share price from 2009 through mid-2016 (International Monetary Fund, 2012)

How will we approach the topic?

Our panel of experts will share their approaches and successes through presentations and a lively and insightful panel discussion:

Specifically, we will hear from our speakers:

  • How they recruit, mentor, and promote women
  • How they created a workplace environment and culture to welcome and embrace diversity
  • Which policies held them back, and what they did to change them
  • How striving to create and maintain a diverse workforce influences their hiring processes
  • How they ensure that a diverse culture continues to grow
  • How they tell the story that highlights women as a driving force in their business’s success
