What the workplace can learn from gaming mechanics
I’d say you learn these lessons even more strongly from in-person gaming. Role-play games like Dungeons & Dragons and a whole assortment of others whose worlds range from medieval times in locations all across the world, to a slightly magicalized version of the present, to the most far-out science fiction worlds, teach people to work collaboratively, solve problems creatively, stretch their imaginations, learn social skills, and “try on” other personas to find out how they might work in non-roleplay situations. I think you get better feedback when you’re in the same room with other people rather than some anonymous username on an MMORPG.
I know I’m a bit biased, since I’m a confirmed role-play geek from way back. But programs like The Game Loft in Belfast are using this model every day to help young people develop social skills, a love of learning, self-esteem, and an ethic of community service.
I certainly wouldn’t have any trouble with a staff day that consisted of several hours of fantasy role-playing games. What a team-building work that could be!
