31 Days of Amazing Women: Inderjit Khurana
Long before there was Slumdog Millionaire, there was Inderjit Khurana—a brilliant Indian teacher who had the insight to recognize that one would not get the millions of slum children who spend their days on the train platforms into the school system. Instead, she brought the schools to the children, creating a model for educating the poorest of the poor—providing the basic skills that will enable them to “work productively, enjoy life’s pleasures, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”
Inderjit has been recognized by Ashoka, the Skoll Foundation, and a host of other award programs. Perhaps most inspiring, a few years back she was profiled in the PBS series The New Heroes. I love Inderjit because she truly demonstrates how as an individual we can make a huge difference even in the face of gigantic problems.
